Start A ProjectDesigned for a modern residence in Venice Beach, California, this home reimagines contemporary coastal living by introducing warmth, personality, and layered character to an otherwise restrained glass house. Rather than competing with the architecture's clean lines and expansive walls of glass, the interiors offer a softer counterpoint, introducing layers of texture, organic forms, and natural materials to create an atmosphere that feels relaxed, expressive, and unmistakably connected to the California coastline.

Traditional wallpapers by Cole & Son, Fornasetti, and Brunschwig & Fils provide unexpected moments of pattern and history, balancing the home's contemporary architecture. Throughout the residence, soft upholstery, custom furnishings, and surfboards casually propped against the walls reflect the easygoing, lived-in lifestyle that defines Venice Beach.

Drawing inspiration from the muted tones of the Pacific landscape, a palette of soft blush, pale green, and airy blue establishes a light-filled backdrop that shifts beautifully throughout the day. Vintage furnishings, richly layered textiles, and tactile materials create a sense of depth, while artwork by Sam Haskins and Shantell Martin introduces bold graphic moments that reflect the creative energy of the family who calls the house home.

Exposed timber beams, a glass balustrade, and generous openings allow light to travel through the home, linking levels and carrying sightlines to the sky.

The same layered approach continues in the private spaces, where a soft cloud-patterned wallcovering frames the bedroom and blue and white wallpaper lines the bath niches, balancing crisp white surfaces with pattern and charm.

Leaning against the courtyard walls, the collection of surfboards and bikes captures the energetic, active spirit of beachside living.

The completed home demonstrates that contemporary architecture need not feel austere. Instead, it becomes a canvas for color, texture, and personal expression, creating an environment that feels vibrant, welcoming, and deeply connected to both its setting and the creative lives of its owners.
