Designed for a young family in Rye, New York, this complete architectural and interior renovation transformed an existing 1980s residence into a contemporary home centered around art, craftsmanship, and everyday family living. Daun Curry Studio led both the architectural redesign and interior design, reimagining the house from the inside out to create a residence that feels cohesive, timeless, and uniquely tailored to its owners.
At the heart of the home, a dramatic double-sided fireplace clad in book-matched Calacatta Gold marble establishes a gallery-inspired setting for the family's exceptional contemporary art collection, which includes works by Mel Bochner, Jeffrey Gibson, Entang Wiharso, Jong Oh, Miya Ando, Miljan Suknovic, and Jake Blake. Throughout the residence, architecture and artwork exist in continuous dialogue, allowing each to enhance the experience of the other.
The entry sets a playful yet sophisticated tone, where a custom marble-topped table, graphic undulating rug, and emerald glass chandelier create an inviting first impression. A colorful beaded punching bag by artist Jeffrey Gibson adds an unexpected artistic element beside a custom leather-clad door, while expansive glass partitions provide a visual connection to the adjoining living spaces beyond.
The custom kitchen balances warmth with precision through cabinetry finished in Farrow & Ball's Pigeon, leathered Taj Mahal quartzite countertops, and bespoke Calico wallcovering.
A sitting room anchored by a bold abstract painting, a luminous powder room, and richly textured surfaces add personality to everyday spaces.
The primary suite was completely reconfigured to improve flow and create a serene retreat defined by Phillip Jeffries raw silk wallcovering, Venetian plaster, antique mirrored cabinetry, and honed La Dolce Vita marble.
A generous dressing room, a marble bathroom with vintage glass lighting complete the primary suite with quiet, practical luxury.
More than a renovation, the project represents a holistic approach to residential design in which architecture, interiors, furnishings, and art are conceived as one unified experience.
